The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released a report that explores automated enforcement systems implemented around the world and characterizes the safety impacts of such deployments.  This report was completed under Contract No. DTNH22-05-D-05043 -- Project No. NTS-01-5-05127 and was performed by TransAnalytics, LLC.  The Sponsoring Office was the Office of Research and Technology, Behavioral Technology Research Division, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Photo Radar began issuing tickets in January, 1997.
Collisions at locations with speed cameras went down 20% from 1996 to 1997.

Total collisions in Scottsdale went down 3% from 1996 to 1997. Collisions were 7% less than projected for 1997.

Mesa Fatal Accidents

Red Light Violations

Mesa Police Department showed a 15% decrease in total collisions from 1995 to 1999 (before cameras were installed). This study tracked six of the original intersections, which were equipped with the photo red light cameras. There has also been a 22% decrease in collisions caused by red light runners at the same locations from 1999 to 2000, despite the increase in traffic volume and increased population from 341,538 in 1995 to 402,623 in 1999.
