On Wed, Jan. 16, 2008, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Council will host its annual Safety Event on the Senate Lawn at the State Capitol.  This event will include a luncheon speaking program for legislators, guests, and the media; a public extrication demonstration; and more than 30 safety partners sharing their information.  For more information on the Council, visit: www.gtsac.org.

2006 Legislative Activity 

Cars Behind Bars (New Impound Law)

 GOHS has pursued and supported legislative initiatives on numerous highway safety issues in conjunction with the Governor's Office. The most important since 1995 have been:

Aggressive Driver statute, the first such law in the nation to be enacted with reference to this dangerous practice

Repeat Offenders - DUI legislation

Extreme DUI - definition and penalties .18 BAC

Open Containers in Vehicles - expanded criteria

Repeal of the Affirmative Defense DUI Loophole

Mandatory Interlock Devices for Repeat Offenders and Extreme DUI

Graduated Drivers License - provisional license for under 18 drivers

Definition change on mandated Child Safety Seats under the age of five - no weight mention

Red Light Running fine enhancement

Lowering of Extreme DUI BAC to .15 BAC

Lowering to .08 BAC the presumptive level for intoxication

Double the fines in State highway work zones when workers present

 Children not riding in the back of pickup trucks

 Primary Seat Belt Law

 Children under 16 must be belted in back seat of vehicles - raise fine for non-seat belt use to $25
