Description
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is pleased to announce a grant funded Spanish language-training program for members of Arizona’s public safety community. This program delivers a variety of Spanish language courses specifically developed for first responders. Initially, the program will focus on the duties of a law enforcement officer with the goal of expanding the course offerings to other first responders in the near future. Instruction includes key phrases and terminology essential to the performance of an officer’s duties in the field. However, many aspects of this training apply to the duties of a cross section of first responders.

The basic five-day, 40-hour course provides instruction on Latino culture, conducting a traffic stop, completing an impaired driver investigation, arrest phrases including high risk stops, field interviews, completing basic investigations and other topics essential to the performance of an officer’s duties. We intend to offer the basic five-day course a number of times at locations throughout the State of Arizona.

The additional course offered is a ten-day, 100-hour immersion class that requires each student to reside at the training facility for the duration of the program. This is an intensive language course, which provides instruction of five separate grammatical tenses, rules of pronunciation, phonetics, and interviewing of witnesses, victims and suspects. This course also delivers extensive training on conducting in Spanish basic criminal investigations, DUI investigations, traffic stops, warrant service and other key aspects of an officer’s duties.

*In the ten-day immersion class, the grant pays each student’s tuition, lodging, study materials, and per diem.  In the five-day course, the grant pays each student’s tuition and course materials only. Individual agencies are responsible for their employee’s travel costs and salary.

If your agency is interested in hosting the basic five-day course or if you would like additional information on this program, please contact Marty Moreno in our Tucson office at (520) 790-5124 or via e-mail at mmoreno@azgohs.gov.

Students who previously attended a GOHS sponsored five-day Spanish class will have priority over others wanting to attend the ten-day immersion class. It is recommended to first take the 5 day course followed by a 10 day class.
